A Thousand Years of History

Ranthambore has its origins dating close to a thousand years. Centric to its medieval heritage is that magnificent Ranthambore Fort of the 10th century constructed by Chauhan kings. Located atop a hill that once made it virtually impassable and served as a major stronghold during Hammir Dev Chauhan’s reign when invasions from the Delhi Sultanate were fiercely resisted.

When it belonged to the Mughals and to the Rajputs, Ranthambore jungles were royal hunting camps. Even Emperor Akbar is believed to have camped out in this location and experienced the thrills of tiger hunting. When it fell into British colonial hands later, it remained a favorite of viceroys and Indian princes
